DJ Neva

In a career spanning 45 years, DJ Neva has been actively involved in the management, booking, promotion, and production of a long list of local, national, and international artists. She has produced countless events, concert series, workshops, educational programs, as well as radio programs, recordings, and soundtracks for film, art installations, and other cutting-edge creative events.

She grew up in New York City and formally studied piano and voice at the Greenwich House Music School and the Hebrew Arts School for Music and Dance, as well as private instruction. She earned her B.S. in Ethnomusicology/Linguistics in 1978, and her M.A. in Latin American & Caribbean Studies/Ethnomusicology in 1987.

DJ Neva specializes in music from the entire African continent, as well as the Caribbean & Latin America; the Maghreb & Middle East, and the Roma (Gypsy) diaspora. She is currently a featured DJ for live world music events and performs regularly with locally-based and touring international artists. She has performed at the Angel Orensanz Foundation, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM Café, 651 Arts, Harvey Theatre), the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Central Park SummerStage, Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing, NJPAC's Sounds of the City, SOB's, Drom, Joe's Pub, the Knitting Factory, the Lion's Den/Sullivan Hall, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and many other notable venues and festivals for both public and private events.

She spent the decade of the 1980s producing some of the first reggae concerts in New York City; conducting field research in Latin America and the Caribbean, and founding The Bluefields Project – a cultural exchange between the U.S. and Nicaragua's Caribbean coast communities. When she resettled in New York in 1990, she brought her extensive knowledge and love of World Music to the airwaves of the Pacifica network's flagship station, WBAI-FM – producing the weekly "Continental Drift" and other programs for nearly six years.

In 2004, DJ Neva joined forces with legendary radio personality Al Angeloro to co-produce his world-renowned program, "New York International," on Haitian community radio station Radio Soleil. Their 4-hour program was broadcast live twice a week for over eight years.

In August 2014, she relocated to New York's Hudson Valley region and joined the staff of community radio station WGXC, where she also hosts a weekly program, 'Music for the Masses.' She also continues to work with bands and musicians she deeply believes in, assisting with their artistic development through guidance, advocacy, studio production, and promotional support.
