ABOUT
Ethno-Trio Troitsa has existed since the mid-90s. They have conducted an amazing ethnographical survey of Belarusian folk, have successfully performed all around the world, and finally, after nearly 20 years of performing abroad, they also became recognized and valued in Belarus.
The number of musical instruments they play is really impressive. They use both Belarusian traditional instruments such as gusli, pipes, duda, and instruments from the whole world: domras, cymbals, handbells, the Dutch gong, the African drum, the African cane, ocarina, modern drums, lyre, electro- and acoustic guitars, and even a scythe. All in all, more than 50 instruments.
The first breakthrough and recognition outside Belarus happened in 1997 when the leader of the Russian legendary rock group "DDT," Yury Shevchuk, noticed the band and invited them to take part in the "DDT" concert, and after that, invited them to the Rock-festival United World in Saint Petersburg. After that, they played in many countries from Chile to Malaysia and released 7 albums.
Troitsa means Trinity, and there are 3 men in the band. The current lineup has existed since 1998 and has proved its total dedication to their project both in good and bad times.
The repertoire of Troitsa consists exclusively of Belarusian traditional songs, which were collected, recorded, and written down by Ivan Kirchuk, the leader of the band, ethnomusicologist, multi-instrumentalist, and singer - during his numerous ethnographic expeditions in Belarusian villages. He has 100 cassettes in his archive, containing more than 2000 hours of priceless ethnographical material: songs, fairy tales, spells, ballads, legends, and instrumental music.
Troitsa works very carefully with the original material: they keep the primary source, the initial melody, dialects, nuances, and breath of those old men or old women, and texts. They even keep original words from Russian, Belarusian, or Ukrainian languages in one song. And yet, these arrangements are their own unique approach to their heritage - very distinctive, elegant sound with an impressive vocal range of Ivan Kirchuk - from roaring bass to tenor.
Lineup:
Ivan Kirchuk - lead vocal, 12-str. guitar, 3 & 4-str. domras, smyk, gusli, pipes, whistles, mound harmonica, reed stick, zhaleykas, lyre, ocarinas, wargan (jaw harp), pipe, rainmaker, duda, kalimba
Yury Dzmitrieu - 6 & 12-str. guitars, 4-str. domra, smyk, zither, vocal
