ABOUT
Annuluk - Malam
Label: Kick the Flame
Release Date: July 25 (Broken Silence)
One year after the much-publicized and critically acclaimed praise of their debut album "Ushna," the Leipzig-Jena Global World Pop ensemble Annuluk is coming out with their second album "Malam." "Malam" appears as a double pack with the bonus CD "Metamorphosis." While Malam contains six brand new songs, the Bonus CD contains four remixed songs from the Vinyl LP in February, as well as three previously unreleased tracks. With their new release "Malam," Annuluk goes a step further than Ushna, which "was an archaic world musical journey, backed by electronic, urban beats drawn from a wide variety of soundscapes.”
In "Malam," these elements were compressed and accelerated into music with strong oriental influences and danceable grooves. "Malam" means "night" in Indonesian and highlights the symbolism of the old request for a necessary global awakening. The deliberate renunciation of using a language and the free, artistic singing of Misa's fantasy language might seem at first alien and strange to the listener. But with this choice of form of expression, Annuluk asks the audience to surrender to the universal, connective character of the music. The socially critical piece "Hayal Kirikliği" represents through samples of known politicians and peace activists - the peaceful and destructive extremes, expressing the dominant forces in the world.
With the bonus CD "Metamorphosis," for the first time, seven remixes of the first album "Ushna" appear, aided by renowned national and international DJs and producers. The idea to publish remixes of Annuluk songs was chosen in honor of the recording in February 2014 of the Vinyl EP realized under the same name.
The bonus CD is now available on popular demand with three more remixes by Drum Panic, Giugliano Pagliaroli, and Alex Cerb. "Metamorphosis" can be regarded as an impressive example of the potential that Annuluk's own creativity itself entails.
The musical virtuosity of Annuluk never serves the end in itself. Rather, it is just another supportive tool in their fascination with creating music.
It was not for nothing that Annuluk qualified as a finalist in the World Creole Music Festival 2014.
Indeed, with "Malam," Annuluk succeeds in a further milestone towards combining real global pop, tradition, and modernity at the highest level and thus creating something entirely new.
