Biography
The musical meeting of Sandra Ulloa, Claudio Rojas, and Rony Dávila was made in 1995 in Valparaíso, Chile, where they are native. Separated, they traveled for some years in Europe to meet again in 2006 in Montreal, Canada. In 2008, they formed the group "SURKALÉN TRIO." It was then they officially performed in Montreal. In 2009, the Russian-Canadian violinist, Maria Demacheva, joined the trio to form the current quartet. The group was renamed "SURKALÉN."
The name of the group was not randomly chosen; "Sur" stands for the South American roots of three of the members of the band, and "Kalén" means "different" in the Selknam language. Selknams are the ancient inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego, a small Native American community, which disappeared in the middle of the 20th century.
Surkalén merges the musical inheritance of the South American culture with African, Asian, European, and Middle Eastern music. Such a musical mixture gives rise to a unique and eloquent music that we call ethno-fusion. By combining ancestral and modern rhythms, Surkalén offers poetic music that is recognizable in many cultures.
In 2008, the group released its first album "Viaje" with the evocative title "travel" in Spanish. Presenting a mixture of traditional melodies and modern sounds, it allows a light flirtation with jazz. In the winter and spring of 2012, thanks to a grant from the program Vivacité Montreal, the group produced and directed their second album "essence de lumière." An album that combines several musical influences: a passionate and mesmerizing rhythm, with jazzy touches to a contemporary soundtrack.
In May 2011 in Montreal, Surkalén was invited to perform as the opening act on stage with Daniel Viglietti – singer, composer, and guitarist – who is one of the most important and influential artists of the popular song of Uruguay and Latin America.
From 2009 to 2012, the band gave performances at several festivals: the Arab World Festival of Montreal, Nuit Blanche at the GESÙ for Montréal en lumière, Festival des Traditions du Monde of Sherbrooke, Festival International de Percussions of Longueuil, Festival du Bout du Monde in Gaspé, the Musique-Multi-Montreal Festival, Latin American Folk Festival of Laval, the International Nights Festival of Africa of Montreal, and the Festival des Arts de Montreal-Nord. Surkalén also gave numerous performances on different stages throughout the province of Quebec. In August 2010, Radio CBC2 featured SURKALEN's "Live Concert," and in September 2010, Surkalen appeared on the French channel of Ontarian Television (TFO) as "Surkalen in concert."
In 2012, the band released their album Essence de lumière, which was recently nominated for World Group of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards 2012.
In 2013, Surkalén won "The Indie Acoustic Project Awards" (USA), "Best CDs of 2012," album "Essence de lumière."

Le nom du groupe n’a pas été choisi au hasard : « Sur » qui rend hommage à l’origine sud-américaine de trois des membres et « Kalén » qui signifie « différent » dans la langue selknam. Les Selknam sont les anciens habitants de la Terre de Feu, un petit peuple amérindien disparu au milieu du XXe siècle.

Présentant un mélange de mélodies traditionnelles et de sonorités modernes, il se permet un léger flirt avec le jazz. En hiver et printemps 2012, grâce à une subvention du programme Vivacité Montréal, le groupe produit et réalise son deuxième album « essence de lumière ». Un album qui conjugue plusieurs influences musicales : une fusion rythmique passionnée et envoûtante, aux touches jazzy sur une trame musicale contemporaine.
Au mois de mai 2011 à Montréal, Surkalén est invité à se produire en première partie sur scène avec Daniel Viglietti – chanteur, compositeur et guitariste – il est l’un des plus importants et influents artiste de la chanson populaire de l’Uruguay et de l’Amérique Latine.
Entre 2009 à 2012, le groupe se produit dans plusieurs festivals : Festival du Monde Arabe de Montréal, Nuit Blanche au GESÙ dans le cadre de Montréal en lumière, Festival des Traditions du Monde de Sherbrooke, Festival International de Percussions de Longueuil, Festival du bout du monde de Gaspé, le Festival Musique Multi-Montréal, Festival Folklorique latino-américain de Laval, le Festival International Nuits d’Afrique de Montréal et le Festival des arts de Montréal-Nord.
