ABOUT
Prasaara are Pradip Sarkar on synthesizers and keyboards, and Sarath Kumara on drums/percussion, electric bass, and guitar. Drawing their influences from space jazz, psychedelia, film soundtrack, as well as South Asian and Brazilian rhythms, they describe their music as a Cinematic, Psychedelic Rhythmscape.

Following a mutual interest in creating music that incorporates atmospheric sounds with electronic re-interpretations of South Asian and Afro-centric rhythms, Sarath and Pradip began experimenting in their home studios in late 2012. The result is Prasaara's six-track debut EP, Tales from the Attic.

The two members of Prasaara have diverse musical backgrounds. Sarath studied tabla in the Hindustani tradition as a child in Sri Lanka, though in his teens he was admonished by his teachers for introducing Western patterns into traditional drumming. He later went on to study the Western drum kit under the mentorship of Sri Lankan drummer Cassim Ziard, who played with Duke Ellington. Sarath has played in Hindustani music ensembles in his native Sri Lanka and in Australia, collaborated with other musicians, and in 2011 won the Melbourne International Jazz Festival's Metlink Musos prize for his performances as a percussionist.

Pradip’s love of music began as a child listening to his parents’ Indian film and Bengali folk music LPs, expanding to embrace the vibrant sounds of Afrobeat and Juju music, which he heard blasting from street stereos when his family moved to Ibadan, Nigeria in the 1980s. After moving to Melbourne in 2000, he progressed from being a music collector to becoming a world music DJ, playing at a range of Melbourne venues and hosting a show for five years at a Melbourne community radio station (PBS-FM). For the past five years, he has been producing house music under the moniker of “Sikander,” and is in his third year as an avid student of the piano.
