Biography

Since the age of 12, Carlos Peninha has been an autodidact guitarist and keyboard player who plays many different instruments, from strings to keyboards, in multiple musical projects. In 1982, he began to study at the Conservatories of Music of Aveiro and Porto, as well as at the School of Jazz of Porto, where he studied with Carlos Azevedo and Mário Barreiros. In 1987, he became a teacher of initiation to piano jazz at the School of Jazz of Porto for two years. Later, he became a professional Music Education teacher, graduated from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. In 1986, he was a co-founder of the Jazz Quintet of Viseu, a pioneering group of jazz music in the region, where he played piano and composed a great part of their repertoire. Since 1994, he has been a regular collaborator of Trigo Limpo Theater ACERT, where he, during the last few years, has developed and executed most of his creative musical activities. He also is responsible for the musical direction of the shows and CD projects called "SOLTAR a LINGUA" (To Free the Language), "CANTOS da LINGUA" (Singing of the Language), and the brand new "A CÔR DA LÍNGUA" (The Colour of the Language), as well as the shows about the spoken and sung word, happenings with poets and writers of the Lusofonia (community of the Portuguese language in the world).

For several years now, Carlos Peninha has been working on creating original songs about poetry by Portuguese-speaking authors, in particular the poetic-musical projects and music scene of the Clean Wheat Theatre Acert. Occasionally, some voices have interpreted these songs in shows where they mix Portuguese music, jazz, and other rhythms from various latitudes. In recent years, the project was taking root with a suite of musicians who share arrangements and new readings of an existing repertoire also punctuated by new songs. Jorge de Sena, Mia Couto, Leite de Vasconcelos, Miguel Torga, Eugénio de Andrade, and João Luis Oliva, among others, are visited musically in this show. Touching the Ground celebrates Portuguese poetry dressed with seasoned music with multicultural flavors, a meeting where the guests promise to share amazing moments of company on many trips.
