ABOUT
In a different world, they would be playing at funerals in New Orleans, wedding parties in the Balkans, or as the musical agitators of a runaway circus. However, from their roots in Birmingham, Johnny Kowalski and the Sexy Weirdos are a band that blends New Orleans jazz and Eastern European melodies with reggae/ska grooves and the fire of punk. Tuba bass lines, cascading fiddle and brass lines, and an enigmatic frontman create an exciting and infectious sound that is maybe best described as carnival punk.

Johnny Kowalski and the Sexy Weirdos first began to make their presence felt on the Birmingham scene in early 2010, honing their special brand of musical lunacy in backstreet boozers and underground venues. The following year, they made two music videos to accompany early recordings and gigged in some strange and wonderful locations, including a twenty-eighth-floor penthouse apartment and an abandoned factory building with no electricity.

Since then, there has been an unprecedented rise in Sexy Weirdo activity; a reputation for euphoric live performances and sell-out shows at Hare and Hounds and The End in Birmingham have helped the band earn good reviews in local fanzines. Throughout the summer of 2012, the band played extensively around England, charming audiences at festivals (including Nozstock and Boomtown), plus shows in London, Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, and Bristol. With the release of the self-produced debut album "Victory for the Monsters" in the autumn of 2012, the band undertook a short European tour in early November. They played shows in Germany, the Czech Republic, France, and Belgium, and on their return home, were invited on air by BBC Introducing Hereford and Worcester to do a live acoustic session.

Could 2013 turn out to be the year of the Sexy Weirdo? With BBC 6 Music airplay on the Tom Robinson Mixtape and a second European tour already under their belts, a second album to record, and bookings at Wychwood Festival, Nozstock, and Boomtown confirmed, the band is gathering momentum and their insatiable appetite to whip crowds of people into heaving, sweaty masses of merriment means there is only one way to find out what could happen next…
