Marta Topferova & Milokraj

New music that draws from Czech & Slavic folklore with jazz & chamber elements

Marta Topferova has recently returned to her homeland, the Czech Republic, in order to conceive and launch an ensemble of Czech and Slavic music - Milokraj - meaning "beloved land". The result is a collection of stunning original songs, which she wrote for this all-star Eastern European lineup: Slovak violinist Stano Paluch, Moldavian cimbalom player Marcel Comendant, Czech guitarist David Doruzka, and Slovak bassist Robert Ragan. Their debut CD was funded by the Czech Ministry of Culture as well as Prague’s City Hall, and is getting rave reviews around Europe. In January 2014, World Music Charts Europe placed the album at #6. Within a short time, Milokraj has become an in-demand group in the Czech Republic, and toured Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, Poland, Hungary, Austria, and Belgium.

The ensemble features:

Marta Topferova – vocals & cuatro

Stano Paluch – violin

Marcel Comendant – cimbalom

David Doruzka – guitars

Robert Ragan - bass

"Very beautiful songs" -- Robert Browning, World Music Institute, New York

"I am very pleased that there is a project whose goal is to bring Czech and Moravian music into a global context." -- Petr Doruzka, Czech National Radio, Prague
