ABOUT
O Ćhonut" is the first single release of contemporary Romani poetry set to music by Slovenian singer-songwriter Katja Šulc. The poem is written by one of the most acclaimed Romani poets, Serbian author Rajko Djurić. Its setting to music is a result of an inspiring collaboration between Katja Šulc and Mexican musician Alban Usatch. Recorded in the picturesque colonial town San Cristobal de las Casas in the Mexican highlands of Chiapas, "O Ćhonut" brings a fresh, hypnotic blend of world music and poetry.
O ćhonut / the moon
O ćhonut asal / the moon is laughing
Amen / we
Trujal e jag / around the fire
Rovas / are crying
O rovipe urǎvel / the sobbing is rising
O asape mekhlǒl tele / laughter descending
O d'el khandel p-o rovipe / the sky is smelling of tears
Amen p-o asape / we of the scent of laughter
Ste o ćhonut korravola / if the moon would lose its sight
Te amen dikhasa / and if our eyes would open
Kon vakarela / who would tell
Kaj e phak e rovimasqe / where the wing of crying
Thaj e asamasqe / and the wing of laughter
Ka arakhadon / meet
O ćhonut / the moon
O ćhonut asal / the moon is laughing
Amen / we
Trujal e jag / around the fire
Rovas / are crying
O rovipe urǎvel / the sobbing is rising
O asape mekhlǒl tele / laughter descending
O d'el khandel p-o rovipe / the sky is smelling of tears
Amen p-o asape / we of the scent of laughter
Ste o ćhonut korravola / if the moon would lose its sight
Te amen dikhasa / and if our eyes would open
Kon vakarela / who would tell
Kaj e phak e rovimasqe / where the wing of crying
Thaj e asamasqe / and the wing of laughter
Ka arakhadon / meet
