Makatumbe is always digging for musical treasures. Traditional melodies are put together in modern dance grooves, spiced with a lot of own, unique sounds. Mashup is the principle, an eclectic synthesis of styles makes for a musical experience that is as wildly diverse, ranging from Cumbia, Reggae and Hip-Hop over Balkan and Raï till Techno and Drum’n’Bass. The band has a quite unusual line-up: Vocal art like beatboxing, raggamuffin and overtone singing meets clarinet and accordion, all sits atop tight drum and bass grooves. Live on stage they present an explosive energy that will drag the dance out of anybody.
In 2017 Makatumbe won two prizes at the German national competition for Global Music (Creole). Firstly they were recognized for “extraordinary musical diversity” for their colourful combination of styles and secondly awarded the “audience prize” for their energetic and convincing live show.
