Storyteller, musician, poet, actor, and writer David Gonzalez is a one-of-a-kind artist. He has created numerous productions that combine compelling drama, music, and multimedia, all of which enchant audiences nationwide with stories of love, hope, courage, and wisdom.
David Gonzalez, whom you may know from his lifelong work bringing spoken word, live music, and audiovisual effects together for young audiences, was recently acknowledged with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Performing Arts for Youth. David also has performances geared toward general audiences, and we list them below.
"City of Dreams" about growing up Latino in America
"Sofrito,"
with Larry Harlow and The Latin Legends Band. ¡Sofrito! is a rousing combo of storytelling, classic Mambo, and funky new music that delightfully brings the stories and music from Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Bronx to the stage. These tales bring to life some of the rich culture and imagery that resonates through the Latino world, and The Latin Legends Band spices up the mix with hot music played by the Grand Masters of the genre. ¡Sofrito! features tons of audience participation in its songs and dances.
Finding North is a one-man play drawn from historical research and oral histories that brings to the stage powerful stories of the yearning, sacrifices, and dreams of the African-American Underground Railroad hero John P. Parker, as well as contemporary American immigrants. Finding North is an exploration and celebration of the continuing quest for freedom in America. (Now available as a dramatic reading of the original script.)
MytholoJazz
MytholoJazz adds a musical twist to Greek myth accompanied by swinging jazz compositions for jazz piano. Audiences journey into Hades with Orpheus as he scats and serenades his way through the ordeals of the underworld in search of his lost wife, Eurydice.
Wounded Splendor - David Gonzalez's production brings together stunning images from the natural world with poetry and monologues inspired by sojourns into the landscape and interviews with environmental activists.
Double Crossed is a one-man narrative recreation of the tragic and heroic voyage of 937 European Jews seeking safe haven in the fallen world of the Holocaust.
