ABOUT
Bauls believe a human being to be the absolute truth above anything else; therefore, reverence to humankind and offering service to a human being is the only pathway to attain spiritual liberation. As practitioners of this philosophy, we believe the universe is made of five elements, and so are we. If we have to understand the universal system, instead of looking outside, we need to dive deep inside us to find our true self, which we call inner knowledge. Our songs are a journey to this inner knowledge.
In this time, as we witness the intolerance and hatred across the globe, we definitely should look towards the universal system where there is no hierarchy. As a part of the universal system, we are just servants of this universe. We all have our part, and worshipping human beings as the absolute form shall lead us to spiritual bliss in the present time. Our sole belief is to be in a world of togetherness, empathy, and love... beyond race, religion, and borders.
... Baul Meets Saz
Emre Gültekin, singer and player of the saz (a long-necked Anatolian lute), unites the sounds of his instrument with the voice and percussion of Malabika Brahma and Sanjay Khyapa, who originate from India and have become the musical ambassadors of Baul culture. The Bauls, a marginal Indian community from Bengal, are nomadic and deeply spiritual, seeking the sacred in human beings rather than in heaven. The Bauls share a similar way of life with the Alevites of Turkey, for whom Emre Gültekin, as a modern troubadour, has made himself the spokesman.
In uniting these two cultures and their musical traditions, Baul Meets Saz creates a strangely modern music, at once powerful and mystical. Since their first encounter, this trio has found the unconditional bond of music and friendship, which was reflected on their first CD, Namaz, in 2018.
