ABOUT
Born in Pondicherry, India in 1967, Balachander had a keen interest in music from early childhood. He had his early exposure to music in the South Indian Classical Music style. Later on, he learned Sarod from Pandit Pradip Barot. Influenced by the Dhrupad style of the great Veena player, the late Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, Balachander found his calling in Dhrupad. After the early demise of Ustad Mohiuddin Dagar, Balachander took extensive training in Dhrupad under the great Dhrupad vocalist, the late Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar.
Balachander undertook a research project to modify the South Indian Veena (also known as Saraswati Veena), and adapt it to suit the Dhrupad style of his Gurus. This was named "Chandra Veena" by his Guru, and Balachander has been extensively performing in India and abroad on the Chandra Veena.
He is based in Mumbai, India, and in addition to concerts, Balachander also gives lecture-demonstrations and teaches Dhrupad at his residence.
