ABOUT
Susmit Sen is a legendary composer and pioneer of indie music in India. He runs his own band, Susmit Sen Chronicles (created in 2011), performing all over India and in all major music festivals.
Susmit has an illustrious music career spanning 40 years. He is known to be an icon, the founder of the Indian Ocean band. When he founded Indian Ocean in 1990, there was no pan-Indian band writing original music. Over the next few years, Indian Ocean's musical sensibility was led by Sen's compositions and unique guitar playing inspired by Indian classical and folk. What followed was a sensation.
Indian Ocean toured more than twenty countries, produced six albums over the next two decades, and played a kind of music never heard before: an Indian expression using mostly Western instruments, anchored by Susmit's self-taught guitar. What makes him truly unique is how he took the Western guitar and transformed its voice into something profoundly Indian—his strings resonate with the fluidity of a sitar, sometimes it resonates with the depth of a sarod, and sometimes the emotion of a sarangi, creating a sound that is distinctly his own. In doing so, he pioneered a new Indian instrumental expression on the guitar, making it an integral voice in the country’s contemporary classical and folk fusion landscape.
By the time he came out with his first solo album in collaboration with some of the most renowned musicians in India (Depths of the Ocean, 2011), and then parted ways with Indian Ocean, Susmit had inspired a few generations.
He continues to innovate, working with his current band, Susmit Sen Chronicles, as well as a variety of other musicians and artists to convey what's most important to him: expression. This is guitar like you've never heard before!
Susmit has toured extensively, performing in over 40 cities in the US, and more than 25 countries like Russia, Japan, the UK, South Africa, etc., introducing global audiences to his distinctive Indian guitar sound and folk-classical fusion.
Susmit’s band, The Susmit Sen Chronicles, brings together intricately composed instrumental pieces that evoke the rich heritage of Indian ragas and folk traditions, woven seamlessly into a contemporary expression. His music has been celebrated by audiences worldwide, and we are keen to explore opportunities for international tours, collaborations, and festivals that focus on Indian classical, folk, and rock fusion.
Susmit's music transcends traditional genres, defies conventional labels, but if one must define it, it resonates with the essence of raga-rock, ethno-fusion, world fusion, cinematic soundscapes, and musical storytelling—an evocative journey beyond genres.
