ABOUT
I was proud to see Brazil give fruit to a CD like this, at a time when Brazil needs to understand itself, to recognize itself." (Monica Salmaso, Brazilian singer, January 2019)
"A love note from a singer to Brazil." (Songlines Magazine, July 2019)
"With a playful flair accentuated by the clarinet sound of Rui Alvim and Aquiles Moraes' trumpet, the vigorous samba (Eduardo Neves and Mauro Aguiar) gives lightness to an album set in the sometimes dense atmosphere of the Brazilian song that resists the pressure of the phonographic industry." (Mauro Ferreira, G1, March 2019)
Noites Brasileiras, an independent album released in February 2019, brings together 12 never-before-published compositions performed by the Brazilian music and jazz singer, Gabriela Kozyra. The Polish singer selected the repertoire especially for the album, on a mission to reveal hidden treasures of the new Brazilian songbook.
Gabriela is not a newcomer. For more than 10 years, she has performed on the stages of European jazz festivals. To mention a few: London Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland), Flipside Festival (UK), and jazz houses such as Pizza Express Jazz Club, Jazz in the Crypt, The Crazy Coqs (UK), Blue Note (Poland), Het Concertgebouw (Holland).
In 2010, she had the opportunity to immerse herself in the vast universe of Brazilian music when she lived in Rio de Janeiro and studied Samba and Choro at the Escola Portátil de Música - where she met many of the musicians and composers of the songs on her first album: Guinga, Miguel Rabello, João Camarero, Luis Barcelos, Eduardo Neves, Anna Paes, and the lyricists Paulo César Pinheiro, Vidal Assis, Mauro Aguiar.
According to the renowned Brazilian singer Monica Salmaso, Gabriela presents a beautiful and mature work on an album that is "a Brazilian trip of the highest quality," where "exquisite songs of new and important composers [are] treated as they should be and sung with precision and much love."
The album, recorded between July and August of 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, counts with the participation of the composers themselves as arrangers and instrumentalists. Among them is the extraordinary guitarist and composer Guinga, who accompanies Gabriela in the waltz Noites Brasileiras, which gave the title to the album and which he composed 50 years ago in partnership with Paulo César Pinheiro, and in Bordado de Rancho, a marcha rancho composed by Anna Paes and Vidal Assis.
