ABOUT
Atabal celebrated 40 years in music since it began playing in Old San Juan in 1982, starting out as four percussionists with many instruments. Now, over four decades later, the bomba group consists of 11 musicians and a dancer. The sound has evolved throughout the years, in part with the addition of sax baritone, alto sax, trumpet, piano, drums, bass, and chorus.
Though the band's founder, Héctor Rodríguez, passed away in 2020, his son Caymmi has continued with the same commitment and drive. In 2023, Atabal was invited and offered four presentations at the iconic New Orleans Jazz Festival that served to start celebrating their 40th anniversary. Halfway through 2024, they've continued to record what is expected to be their anniversary EP. Hopefully, they will continue recording and playing bomba and plena music for all to appreciate.
