ABOUT
Abuabua is a Romanian band, born in Bucharest in 2014. "A Handful of Seeds," our first released album, is built on old Romanian lullabies. The songs have been collected by Elena Șulea, who is an ethnomusicologist and has written an essay about world music. She has also studied Romanian lullabies for a long time. Călin Torsan (wind instruments) and Juan Carlos Negretti (our percussionist from Venezuela) have developed another world music project for ten years: the Einuiea group. They have a rich experience in this style and have made two records with Einuiea: "Byzantine Stories" (with Romanian, Jewish, and Turkish influences) and "Noa" (with Japanese roots, after a two-month Japanese tour).
Abuabua is:
- Elena Șulea – voice, violin
- Călin Torsan – wind instruments
- Victor Podeanu – guitar
- Juan Carlos Negretti – percussion
- Vasile Gherghel – artistic producer
We added a few lullabies from all over the world to our program to emphasize the soporific character of our material "A Handful of Seeds." In old Romanian language, "abua" is a vocable used to try to fall asleep a child.
