Hailing from the vibrant suburb of Highfield in Zimbabwe's capital city, Pamuzinda emerged in 1990 with a mission to foster art and culture among the youth in a region facing social and economic challenges. Recognizing the lack of artistic expression and cultural awareness, the band's founders took it upon themselves to create a platform for artistic exploration and celebration of their heritage.
The group's official inception took place at the esteemed St Mary's New Highfield Catholic Church, with the blessings of the Catholic Youth Association. However, their bold endeavor was met with resistance and skepticism. Some elders viewed the blending of African culture and Christianity as incompatible, while certain youth, influenced by modernity, hesitated to embrace traditional African attire. The group faced criticism and was eventually expelled from operating within the confines of the Catholic premises. Undeterred, Pamuzinda found a new home at the Zimbabwe Hall Social Centre, where they continued to nurture their artistic vision.
Over the years, Pamuzinda's mesmerizing performances of energetic traditional dances and captivating music have earned them a well-deserved reputation as a household name. At the core of their musical prowess lies the revered mbira (thumb piano), seamlessly complemented by marimba (balafon), shakers, congas, and acoustic guitar. Their sound weaves a rich tapestry of Zimbabwean culture, creating an enchanting experience for audiences far and wide.
