About "Nanga"
Orchestre Baka Gbine are indigenous Baka hunter-gatherers living in the Cameroon rainforest. Music is central to their traditional beliefs and lives. To be Baka is to be a musician.
Nanga was recorded and filmed in February 2023 at Molembengoy, a forest camp near the Congo border in Cameroon..
We were planning to release the track last summer ,and then organise a European tour 2025. Sadly Ndia, the percussionist, died last July. This put a halt on the project but we decided to finish it and let people hear it. I'll be returning to Cameroon soon and will see how long it might be before the band are ready to play without Ndia, who has bee a mainstay since 2003 when he travelled to Yaounde to perform in the British High Commission.
