ABOUT
Mitsune is a dynamic world music ensemble with members hailing from Japan, Germany, Australia, and Greece. Fronted by an all-female trio of shamisen players and backed by a rhythm section of percussion & double bass, Mitsune is a world fusion experience that evokes emotion, folklore imagery, and grooves to get your body moving. The heart and soul of Mitsune is the Tsugaru shamisen, a distinctive 3-stringed Japanese folk instrument once favored by the blind monks of olden Japan.
The band performs an exciting mix of Japanese folk songs, virtuosic modern repertoire, and original compositions & arrangements drawing from Middle Eastern, blues, folk, and rock influences. Their concerts are joyous and engaging, spiced with vocals, violin, shinobue (bamboo flute), shimedaiko (drum), and of course, a colorful and organic rhythm section delivering bass and driving beats.
Since their formation in April 2018, Mitsune has performed extensively at cultural events, festivals, and concerts across Europe. In 2019, they supported Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote) in her solo show in Berlin and performed alongside esteemed Japanese traditional musicians Yoshiyuki Kimura and Akihiro & Hibiki Ichikawa. They are set to release their new album 'Hazama' on 18th February 2022.
