Kirubel Assefa & The Kebra Natty Project
BIO
Kirubel is a multi-instrumentalist (bass, guitar, drums, and keyboards), music composer of his band, Lasta Sound, for which he also wrote 85% of the music. As a well-rounded musician/producer/arranger wearing many hats, Kirubel and Lasta Sound gained recognition with their portrayal in the movie "Journey to Lasta," a biopic of the Lasta Sound members. Kirubel and the other band members did a great job portraying themselves in the movie. Besides his work with the band, Kirubel has composed music for the IMAX documentary "Mystery of the Nile," worked as a sound designer for several commercial projects, and has been involved in and contributed his skills to a myriad of community and nonprofit projects. Kirubel has recently completed his new masterpiece, "T.A.B.A.," a musical project that elevates the Ethio jazz genre to a different level.
T.A.B.A. will be released in 2023 and features a blend of jazz with West African flavor melded with Ethiopian music from the 70s and 80s, which is considered the golden age of Ethiopian music. The new compositions are groovy and transport you in a time machine back and forth between tracks. The musicians on Kebra Natty are top players from different parts of the musical world, gathered to capture the unique sound of Ethio Jazz. A single will be released in early summer of 2023.
