ABOUT
Awake Folk Rhythms is an award-winning traditional music and dance group based in Accra, Ghana. The group's music and performance are heavily influenced by West African music, including singing, drumming, and dancing. Our performances are culturally unique in many ways, from our costumes and instruments to our rhythms, dance, and songs, including a 15-minute slot to interact with our audience and educate them about Ghana (Africa) and our rich culture. Our costumes are mostly colorful Ghanaian fabric designed by the director of the band. These fabrics are embedded with Ghanaian symbols called Adinkra symbols; each symbol has a distinctive meaning. An example is the Gye Nyame symbol, which means "Only God." The group is made up of professional and experienced talents who have been in the creative arts space for decades.
