About "Hnala Baba Dida"
The single is based on a recording made in the Eastern Carpathians by the band manager, who did ethnographic fieldwork in the Polish-Ukrainian border region in 2020. The song was recorded from an inhabitant of Lubnia, a village in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia Oblast, situated right on the border with Poland. Ethnographers note that this area is inhabited by highlanders known as Boykos.
The song narrates a serious marital quarrel with a touch of humour. A misunderstanding between an old woman (baba) and an old man (did) ends tragically when, in his anger, the husband drowns his wife in the village stream. Unable to bear being alone, he quickly marries a younger woman. A few days later, as he returns with his newlywed from the church and passes the bend in the river where he drowned his first wife, he sees her spirit emerge from the water, greeting him with, “I have already bathed; we can live together again.” Unlike our previous songs, this one features the handpan alongside the violin ane the hurdy-gurdy.
