ABOUT
Voxnova was formed in 1997 by then-art director Alan MacDonald in pursuit of a more creative outlet in life. Twenty years later, musicians from all over the globe (Scotland, England, France, Italy, Quebec, Belgium, Serbia, Greece, Chile, Colombia, plus locals) have all left traces in the repertoire. Source material includes French Gypsy swing, flamenco rumba made famous by the Gypsy Kings, Venezuelan waltz, as well as original material by band members. Alan MacDonald plays Cuban bongos and cajón, a box-like instrument from Peru now closely associated with flamenco for its ability to imitate las palmas (hand clapping). Math professor James Sneyd has performed all over the world in various genres. Guitarist Doug Robertson has a degree in music and is a brilliant, inventive soloist. Music tutor and former Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra bassist Alberto Santarelli is a legendary figure in the local and international jazz scene.
