About "Gracey Briney "
The story of local Redruth legend Gracey Briney (Grace Hichens) was discovered through 19th century newspaper cuttings which described her distinctive appearance and told of her wrestling, drinking and smoking at the pub with the other miners on pay day (although viewed as unusual at the time, subsequent research has shown that women did sometimes work underground in the mines). The press cuttings also tell of her regular attendance at the market in Redruth and a 50 mile round trip made at the age of 91 to collect cherries to sell at Redruth Mazzard Fair. More details about her story were uncovered through Lynne Mayers’s work on bal maidens in Devon and Cornwall, and her story has been turned into song by Lizzie Pridmore.
