About "Uyaheleza: An Ode To Imfundamakhwela"
An Ode To Imfundamakhwela celebrates the tenacity of a whirligig beetle, the rapid moving water beetle. The poem finds the characteristics of this insect essential for survival in a survivalist society.
A whirligig beetle has four eyes that see above and beneath the water. It has wings to fly what the water dries out. Beneath the wings it has a bubble that it fills up with air when it has to go under.
Imfundamakhwela in isiZulu means novice. Imfundamakhwela is also the naming word for a whirligig beetle of the Coleoptera Gyniridae family. Ibhungane lamanzi. Okay.?! Emakhaya amagrootmane athumela those who can’t whistle to catch these fast moving water beetles with the promise of teaching them the art of bending the wind. The instruction is that, upon catching les’khwishikhwishi intwana must place it on the tip of their tongue and let it bite. In the bite lies the invaluable art of the whistle.
