JUNO and Polaris Prize Nominated Singer-Songwriter Terra Lightfoot Strips Things Back on New Folk Ballad “Already There In My Mind” Acclaimed JUNO and Polaris Prize-nominated singer-songwriter Terra Lightfoot returns with her most intimate offering yet: “Already There In My Mind,” a soulful, piano-led ballad rooted in folk-rock and indie folk tradition. Captured in a single take on her childhood piano, the song channels surrender and emotional release through Lightfoot’s raw vocal delivery and organic, living-room warmth.

Recorded just before an overseas trip with her husband and co-producer Jon Auer, the track came together in a flurry of inspiration. “We pulled out my childhood piano from the living room wall after dinner and tracked the vocal and piano at the same time,” Lightfoot shares. “It was sort of a whirlwind…and then we left it alone while we visited Jon’s family abroad. We came back a couple weeks later to what I think is one of the best tracks on the record.”

Written in a moment of frustration and reflection, “Already There In My Mind” is ultimately a song about letting go – of expectation, of fear – and leaning into possibility, no matter the circumstances. That theme finds resonance not just in the lyrics, but in the way the song was born: quickly, quietly, and with total trust in the moment.

“Already There In My Mind” is a standout track from Home Front, Lightfoot’s forthcoming album out October 17 via Sonic Unyon Records. Recorded entirely in her Ontario living room and surrounding nature with Auer, the record offers a deep sense of place and emotional clarity, softening the electric edge of previous albums in favour of something quieter, but just as powerful.
