ABOUT
I'm Kerfew...
The Dubwalla, Rapwalla, Dogwalla!
**Since 2016, to save confusion, all my music is released under the name Kerfew (UK) as there is another Kerfew!
I'm Kerfew (UK), a British Asian entertainer, DJ, rapper, and content creator, and my journey in the music industry spans over three decades. Born as Chetan Kumar Patel in Leicester to Indian parents from Uganda, my musical path began early, playing the naal at Gujarati festivals with my father, who was a well-known singer. Those early experiences shaped my passion for music and set the stage for a career rooted in creativity, culture, and dedication to my heritage.
My journey into music really took off in the early '90s when I started DJing and hosting shows on radio stations like Kickin FM and Fresh FM. In 2004, I founded MIC (Mother India's Children), a British Asian rap group that blended traditional cultural influences with contemporary hip-hop, helping carve out a unique space in the UK music scene.
My solo career as a rapper began with the release of my debut album "What's the Time?" in 2006, followed by my second album "Mr. Wolf" in 2018, along with several mixtapes that helped shape the UK Asian music scene. My sound is a fusion of Eastern and Western influences, and my work often explores themes of cultural identity, social issues, and personal experiences. Over the years, my tracks have been featured on BBC Asian Network, BBC 1Xtra, and Capital Radio, earning recognition from fans and industry peers alike.
As a performer, I've had the opportunity to share the stage with legends like Apache Indian, GZA from Wu-Tang Clan, Cappadonna, and The Beatnuts. I've also hosted and performed at numerous festivals and high-profile events, such as the Leicester Belgrave Mela, Leicester Riverside Festival, and shows at 2Funky Music Café, helping to solidify my reputation as a vibrant cultural ambassador.
In recent years, I've embraced the power of social media, particularly TikTok, where I've gained recognition for my bilingual Gujarati raps. Videos like the viral "Top Boy Slang Guide in Gujarati" and a series of TikTok duets have helped me reach new audiences globally. I've combined rap with humor, all while promoting my love for the Gujarati language and culture. It's been an exciting way to bring Gujarati hip-hop into the mainstream, breaking down cultural barriers and introducing the language to a broader audience.
Beyond music, I'm a proud father of three (and three dogs!), a business owner, and an advocate for the community. One of my recent projects includes running a 30-week Spoken Word/Rap After School Club, where I encourage young people to embrace creativity and self-confidence. My mission is to inspire and uplift others through my music, storytelling, and sense of humor, all while promoting positivity and the richness of Gujarati culture.
I am a massive dog lover and have owned a lot of them over the years. I love to design and also create brands, so in 2015 I launched 'O'K9 Products'. We produce our fragrances in the UK and manufacture products like dog collars, combs, leads, lick mats, and toys from various suppliers over the world. We also handmake products in the UK. http://www.ok9products.co.uk
Some of my milestones include performing with Apache Indian at the Leicester Belgrave Mela (2024), hosting the Christmas Lights switch-on at Leicester Haymarket (2023 & 2024), and collaborating with iconic artists like Rodney P, Blak Twang, and Pharoahe Monch. From my early days as a teen radio presenter to hosting events with global stars, my journey has been one of resilience, reinvention, and a relentless passion for what I do.
