The word ‘tizita/ትዝታ’ means ‘nostalgia’ or ‘longing’ in Amharic; at the same time, it is the name of a ‘kinit’ - an Ethiopian pentatonic scale – a scale of wistfulness and sentimentality. Ethiopian Waltz developed out of improvisations on this scale, and is – besides not being a real waltz – blue to the bone.
