ABOUT
Bangalore Dreams

Jyotsna Srikanth's sonorous violin sings out the vivid melodies and redolent ragas of her Bangalore homeland, twisted through with jazz. Jyotsna's inspiration for Bangalore Dreams is taken from the gopuram monuments of Southern India. Gopurams are highly decorative towers found in Hindu temples from the region. These sumptuous sculptures are a riot of color, intricately depicting the many gods and deities of the Hindu faith. The structures often stand tall in the midst of a silent, perfectly still kalyani (pond) – a sight ripe for thoughtful contemplation. In conversation, Jyotsna tells of hours spent on the pond steps, gazing at the gopuram, gathering her thoughts, and divining inspiration for her next musical move. Bangalore Dreams is Jyotsna's meditations on a theme of encounters; east meets west, ornamentation meets groove, India meets jazz. Jyotsna's distinctive approach to harmony pays deep respect to the ancient Carnatic tradition while curling in at the sides to softly accommodate traditional jazz changes. Bangalore Dreams is scored for violin, electric keys, bass guitar, drum set, and Indian percussion. Jyotsna's fiddle leads the way, her tone caramel-sweet, rich and honeyed yet earth-toned, marked and lined with a grainy, echoing ochre at once.
