A Naked Man In Paradise: A small plaque on a bridge over the River Irwell (on the border of Salford and Manchester) tells of a tragic incident that took place at a nearby shipyard in 1828. The story of the ill-fated launch of the boat Emma is truly shocking, but what really struck a chord with us was the plight of the fishmonger John Archer, who was never officially added to the list of 38 victims – despite the fact he died at home of pneumonia as a direct result of his efforts to save the lives of others on the day. We have used the melody of The Lancashire Liar (an old regional ditty based on the even older song The Derby Ram) as our musical setting. The tale predates Victoria’s coronation, but it does give a colourful taste of the kind of world she was growing up in.
