ABOUT
After a successful career in pop music, radio, and theatre, Bilja Krstic turned to her musical heritage from the Balkans, to the music that she had kept close to her heart since childhood. For more than five years, she patiently collected obscure folk songs from the territory of Kosovo, south Serbia, Macedonia, the Vlach district in east Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary. In 2001, she formed the Bistrik Orchestra and recorded 3 albums: "Bistrik" (2001), "Zapisi" (2003), and "Tarpos" (2007). "Bistrik" was re-released by the V2-Greece record label in May 2002, and "Tarpos" was published by the German record label "Intuition/Schott Music" (2007). "Tarpos" reached the top of the world list of the World Music magazine "Songlines" (number 6), and Trad Magazine gave the album the "Bravos award." In 2013, Biljana released an a cappella album, "Izvoriste." The music performed by BILJA KRSTIC & BISTRIK ORCHESTRA is a fusion, a blend of traditional ethno music, a cappella songs, and ethno grooves with elements of improvisation and a modern musical approach. Their ambition is to introduce folklore into contemporary performance art in order to awaken the heart and rejuvenate energy and forgotten emotions. Biljana's magical stage presence and beautiful voice have been acclaimed at more than 400 concerts around the world and in her home country; this was most powerfully acknowledged when she was invited as the only female vocal performer from the Mediterranean at the festival "Mostra Sesc de Artes" in Sao Paulo in 2005. At the time, she was a member of the Mediterraneo Orchestra, which included about 25 top musicians from all over the world.
