The trees at Cookworthy Knapp mark the journey of the A30 from Devon into Cornwall; they stand high on the hill to your left as you drive towards the town of Launceston. Once the capital of the county, Launceston/Lanson was seen as the gateway to Cornwall in antiquity. In not so ancient times before the A30 bypass was built over the River Tamar in 1976 it was indeed, for many, the way in to the county and the winding roads and Norman gatehouses saw much slow moving traffic. The trees stand there through all weather at all times of the day overseeing the passing of traffic and providing a welcome signpost that you’re nearly home (if you’re from Lanson).
