About "Sanity"
Sanity from City Of Rocks was as if written for this painting without the knowledge that Paula Rego's “Well” existed or was about to be created. I wrote Sanity as a reaction to cases of forced abortion in China on NPR in April of 2007. The story made me really angry and restless for several days I just had to write about it. Some of the words in Sanity “babies were in wooden pots…” literally depict the bucket in this painting and “They wouldn’t talk, they wouldn’t smile. Expressionless they stare wide…” very immediately describes the person with the headscarf staring into me from the canvas.
