A Platform for Ethnically and Culturally Inspired Music
About ""Sails are Spread for Glory""
My great-grandfather, Johnson Oatman, Jr., was the best known and most beloved hymn writer in America at the turn of the 20th Century. Many of his hymns, like "Higher Ground", "Count Your Blessings", and ""Holy Holy Holy is what the Angels Sing" have been included in hundreds of hymnals and are still being performed today, mainly by Gospel Choirs. This year, 101 years after his death, I edited the lyrics of several of his most famous hymns and set them to new music in a more contemporary style and recorded them for the album "Higher Ground", which is competing in the Roots Gospel category of the 66th Grammys. This video for this one features photos and movie footage of me sailing on the Casco Bay in Maine.
