Balini-Youmala is a medley of two traditional Gnawa tunes that I usually play with Majid. I felt that one had a good
beginning and the other a good ending, so I decided to put them together for the occasion. Balini, in reference to
the Gnawa tradition is of the black color, the spirits of the forest, and the lyrics are a sort of introspective
question/plea, ''what is it about music that has me hooked, why me?''. Youmala is not of any specific color in the
gnawa trance ceremony as it is used as an introduction to it and forms the first part of the repertoire of what will
be the trance night, it is a song for children and more easygoing.
