A Platform for Ethnically and Culturally Inspired Music
ABOUT
HAUA—in translation from the Bashkir language means space, air. The leading instrument in the project—Kurai, is a wind instrument made from a reed which grows at the junction of Europe and Asia, in the Ural mountains area. Kurai—the Bashkirs' traditional national instrument, was first mentioned in the 6th century in the writings of a traveler passing through the great Ural steppe, which was populated by nomadic people. The art of playing this unique wind instrument is passed from father to son, by masters of Bashkortostan. A distinctive feature of this instrument is that it has no mouthpiece. The performer produces sound by placing it between the teeth and lips, adding throat intonation. The project takes its origins in Bashkortostan, the republic at the foothills of the Southern Urals.

HAUA (Haua), translated from many languages, means space, air, wind.
