Georgi Dobrev was born in the city of Plovdiv (Bulgaria). At the age of seven, he started playing the kaval (a traditional Bulgarian folklore instrument). He studied for twelve years at the music school “Lyuben Karavelov” in Plovdiv. In 2013, he was accepted to study at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv. During his student years, he performed as a soloist in the academy’s folk orchestra, as well as with many other groups. He graduated in 2017 as a professional kaval player. In 2022, he graduated with a master's degree in sound engineering.
Georgi Dobrev has won several first and special prizes in national competitions. He participates in many recordings with different projects and orchestras. He is also a kaval teacher at a few international seminars and Bulgarian private schools.
Georgi Dobrev plays with a wide range of groups and performs concerts in Bulgaria and other countries. He participates in festivals and events like “Jazzopen Stuttgart,” “Expo 2020 Dubai,” “Balkan Trafik Festival,” and many others. He is also part of the project "MOSAIC" (Youth Intercultural Mediterranean Orchestra), the “Medinea” community, “Bagri formation,” and he has been part of the successful show “I Silenti” guided by the composer and saxophone player Fabrizio Cassol featuring Tcha Limberger and Claron McFadden. From September 2023, he is a soloist of the Folk Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio.
