A song about a trip to a Fairground, a sort of parallel universe crammed full of childhood memories of travelling folk, laughter, grills, floss, engine oil and dodgems dancing recklessly along to the sounds of over pumped PA systems, but … somewhere to have fun, forget troubles. Such a spot might be somewhere to rekindle friendship and love, a place of excitement which offers a temporary return to the world of our adolescent selves when the world seemed to offer endless possibilities.
‘This Fairground Night’ is thus a metaphor for a place where love in need of repair can spend ‘time out’ to recalibrate itself and find ways to reconnect broken bonds. It’s a space we sometimes need to spend time in, somewhere to remember our beginnings, rejuvenate our emotions and reconcile our differences. ‘This Fairground Night’ is where this might take place.
Perhaps a lot of what we search for during our lives is often much closer to us than we imagine. Thus, the line, ‘That all that I want, is all I can see …’ is a reflection of this view, possible reconciliation and understanding brought about by sharing an experience through the childhood lens of joy – a visit to a Fairground.
This is what the song is about.
Production:
We unashamedly went for a retro sound with the use of a Hammond organ that seemed an appropriate way to create it but then experimented with more contemporary sounds to create a fairground ambiance at the beginning. This was then mixed with violin and piano parts, 2 and 4 part harmonies, slide, accoustic and electric guitars, percussion, bass and ‘Voila!’
