Biography

Born in Madagascar, Jean Charles Razanakoto, better known as Charles Kely ("little Charles"), is an author and composer, and a guitar virtuoso.

He started playing the guitar at 8: "I never learned in school; I learned at home alone, with books and just opening my ears. I was curious, I received advice from other musicians." In 1980, he created a band with his brothers, Zana-Rotsy. They covered traditional songs that they adapted to folk music. In 1997, Charles Kely was chosen by Rajery, the great valiha player, to tour around the world with his band. Together, they played in Paris, Chicago, Seattle, New Orleans, and at the International Festival of Louisiane. In 2003, Charles released his first album "Anilanao." He played in France at the festivals Musiques Métisses, La Guinguette Mobile, Les Musicaves. In 2004, he toured again with Rajery in East Africa (Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tanzania, Mozambique), in Mayotte, and Seychelles. Since 2008, as a guitarist, Charles has toured with prestigious world music artists such as Tony Rabeson, Mounira Mitchala, Razia Said... He is now focusing on his solo career with the release of the CD "Zoma Zoma" in his own and unique manner: the open gasy style, an acoustic music from Madagascar, with a touch of bossa, jazz, blues, funk, and subtle African influences.
