ABOUT

Composer, singer and percussionist, Carlton Rara was born in France in 1975 to a Haitian mother and a French father.

Carlton first started as a solo performer, singing and playing percussions, he progressively brought out all his influences, ranging from blues, reggae, voodoo, soul and world music to eventually create a new style of his own.

Al Jarreau, Michael Jackson, Bill Withers, bluesman Taj Mahal, The Police, rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg or famous jazzman Dizzy Gillespie are some of the various performers that most inspired him.

Since 2005, he has performed in many international festivals (South Africa, France, Belgium, Haiti, Switzerland…). He recorded in 2009 his first album Peyi Blue that was acclaimed by the critics and started bringing him a wider recognition.

His albums were selected twice by FIP radio (Radio France group) in 2009 and 2012, his second and new airing album HOME ranges in Top 20 World Music best albums of year 2012 by Les Inrocks(french Magazine).  Famous film maker Pedro Almodovar listed the album HOME as one of the most inspiring music he heard making the film I’m so Excited.

Carlton Rara’s music is definitely the embodiment of a modern new era. He is now back on the road with the HOME Tour (in the mood for blues, roots and grooves) with a brand new band hot as ever.

Carlton has also developped the art of “reading”, giving literature and poetry a voice and a shape. Thus he put on shows dedicated to haitian and carribean writers such as Franketienne or Aimé Césaire. He also took part in drama plays as a musician and actor.

In 2009, he performed live music for the film Why Worry starring Harold Lloyd which was a big success in the International silent Film Festival of Anères (France).
