Les Filles de Illighadad (Niger) who bring to the festival the music of rural Niger called “tende” featuring compositions built from vocals, handclaps, and percussion; 47Soul (Palestine/UK) renowned for inventing their own genre Shamstep, which fuses dubby synthie sounds with rock elements, hip-hop and pop lyrics in English and Arabic; Gamelan Cudamani (Bali, Indonesia) known for their exceptional creativity, superb artistry, and unflagging love for the classical treasures of Balinese tradition; Frontera Bugalú (Mexico/Texas) who performs a mix of high-energy “cumbia” blended flawlessly with other traditional Mexican and Latin rhythms; Saraswarthi Ranganathan (India/US) will treat festival goers to an artistically rich, aesthetically delightful presentation of the ancient Veenà; and KOKOKO! (Democratic Republic of Congo) whose alternative music, which includes DIY instruments, has been described as “explosive” and “genius.” Local artists Grooversity (Boston/Brazil) and Eastern Medicine Singers (Algonquin, Rhode Island) will also be performing.
